Wolves Given a Howling by City
WWFC U18s 1 – 3 MCFC U18s
On a morning with howling winds City travel to Wolves for their last January fixture as they take a week’s break till facing second place Bolton at home on the 3rd February.
City won the toss and decided to play with the wind, but it was Wolves who took a surprising lead as City had controlled most of the possession, this happened when their forward was allowed to run
clear of a rather static City defence.
City managed to equalize at the crucial time of just on the stroke of half time when a Karl Moore cross was handled in the box and the referee awarded the penalty. Ched Evans coolly stepped up to
take responsibility and smashed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
City had to make an early change in the second half, losing Javan Vidal to a leg injury in the fourth minute. Within five minutes of that change, City took the lead when Donal McDermott’s persistence
in the Wolves box led to City winning a corner. Paul Marshall whipped a great ball across and Evans rose well to head the ball in.
City could have been on level terms when the Wolves player was given too much space from thirty yards, but his great strike was drifted just wide by the wind.
City made it much more comfortable with just over fifteen minutes to go when Paul Marshall made a strong run from midfield and hit a powerful shot that took a hard deflection of the Wolves defender,
but that just took all the pace of the ball and left the keeper stranded as David Ball ran in to take his poachers goal as he slotted the ball into the corner of the net.
Praise has to go to a great team ethic who worked really hard in very difficult conditions and although Wolves came back at City, the hard working defence and the alert Filip Mentel never looked like
giving anything else away.
City’s long trip down the M6 will be doubly delightful as Bolton lost one nil away to bottom place Stoke; leaving City thirteen points clear at the top of their league and record their ninth win on
the bounce.
City: Mentel(GK), Vidal(Obeng 49), Mee, McDonald, Breen(Capt.), Marshall, Clayton, McDermott, Evans, Ball, Moore.
The U16s were brought back to earth after their great 7-0 victory last week by drawing 1 – 1 after going one nil up in the first half with a penalty.
