Wigan Reserve Review

WAFC Reserves 2 - 1 MCFC Reserves

Wigan faced a City side that was pretty depleted as the Totesport team had played Bury that afternoon and all fit first team players had travelled to Tenerife for a winter break for training in the warmth and sun. City took the lead in the second half thanks to David Ball. Wigan equalized through Tomasz Cywka and then got the winner seven minutes later with a goal from Joe Holt.

The first half was really uneventful apart from a good turn and shot by Ball that Neil Postlethwaite in the Wigan goal did well to save in the forty fourth minute. City's goal came on the hour mark with good work by Ryan McGivern and Karl Moore down the left flank led to Moore crossing back for Ball who shot at goal but Postlethwaite stopped the shot but could not prevent Ball running in and nicking the ball away and knocking it in from a tight angle.

Wigan were gifted an equalizer on fourteen minutes later when despite what City's official site said the incompetent Tal Ben Haim dived in for a challenge on Cywka in the area when he was too far away and when the ball had already been released and so the referee had no option but to award the penalty. Cywka struck the penalty well and sent Clegg the wrong way.

Clegg did very well to stop a thirty yard direct free kick from Lewis Field. Ben Haim was also culpable for Wigan's winner on eighty one minutes when he backed off and allowed Holt to run at goal and curl his low shot into the bottom corner past a despairing dive by Clegg.

City next face Newcastle United at home this Tuesday and has been re-arranged to be played at Hyde with a 7pm kick off. With the transfer window ending soon who knows what sort of team will be put out.
