Manchester Senior Cup

Manchester City 0 Oldham Athletic 0

(City won 4-2 on penalties)

This was one of those games where the vast majority if not all of the paultry crowd, if given the choice would have opted to stay at home, instead of encountering the cold and rain of the Athletics arena.

Both teams had probably also decided that they would rather be at home as they turned in a lacklustre and mundane performance, in a tie that was finally decided on penalties.

There was only one real effort of note in the first half when the Oldham keeper turned a Michael Johnson shot round for a corner. The introduction of John Guidetti for Michael Johnson, meant City went with two upfront in the second half. However chances or efforts on goal still remained at a premium.

The crowd were almost woken up from their slumber on 71 minutes, when Javan Vidal was clearly up ended in the box, but the referee must have been a sleep as well because he gave no infringemnet. And at the other end Tobias Johansen clearly impeded an Oldham Player but no spot kick was awarded and the young Norwegian stayed on the pitch.

So it went to penalties James Poole stepped up first and scored, Kieran Lee put away Oldhams first spot kick, then there were two saves as Jack Redshaw and Dale Stephens saw their efforts kept out. Paul Marshall and Paul Black drew things out as they both found the back of the net, John Guidettis conversion put pressure on Ryan Brooke and Tobias Johensen pulled off another save, to allow Kieran Trippier to step up and win the shoot out for City
