FA PREMIER ACADEMY LEAGUE
Saturday 28th January 2012
Manchester City 0 Bolton Wanderers 3
It was a big week at City for a number of academy prospects who found out if they were to be retained by City, so there was much change to the side City put out, with several out injured(Henshall, Evans, Rusnak, Lawlor, Hiwula), others trying to earn contracts with other sides and a couple playing who had been told they were being released, it was to be honest that such upheavel had a bearing on the result
This game has to go down as one of the academy worst results alongside the performance because it was against the group C’s worst team and the manner in which they achieved the result because the players worked hard to get the ball back but then showed a casual approach to how they used the ball to achieve a favourable result.
City started the better of the two teams with a good move involving the recently released Paul Clowes played in Dominic McHale on the right and he crossed the ball back in but Paul who received the ball back could only steer the ball wide.
Then a mad five minutes where City went two nil down when the writing was on the wall a long through ball exposed the City defence and forced Angus Gunn into a good save and the resulting corner was not dealt with and the ball came to Oscar Turelkeld who fired a great strike across the face of goal into the far corner of the goal.
Just a few minutes later and Bolton had doubled their lead where gaps in the City defence allowed the through ball and Zach Clough was able to round Gunn and fire the ball into the empty goal.
City only had one real effort for the rest of the half when McHale cut slightly inside from the right flank and his curling shot that was heading for the bottom corner was able to just be tipped behind for a corner.
The second half was a real disappointment because you would have thought that City might have come out after the break with some resilience but instead they were even worse than the first half and so it was no surprise that Bolton were able to get a third goal.
That goal was a goal to savour however as it deserved to win any game with the thirty yard strike coming from Luke Woodland which just dipped under the bar giving Angus Gunn no chance after the City defence had woefully backed off Luke to run into a shooting position.
